Brazilian finance minister Guido Mantega gave start to the G20 summit in São Paulo. Brazilian president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva spoke during the plenary sitting of finance ministers and central bank presidents. According to the Brazilian chief of state, the emerging economies present the conditions to claim more decision power: “We want to expand the participation of emerging nations in the international market”.

During his speech, the Brazilian president spoke of the global financial crisis that has been affecting all countries. Despite low inflation and controlled public debts, he states that Brazil is already suffering its consequences: “Even in the most prepared countries , such as Brazil, loans are more expensive”.

The president also spoke of the growing need of more effective measures to reduce the impacts of the international crisis. “ The advanced countries and financial organisms such as the IMF should adopt certain measures to restore liquidity in international markets”.

The Brazilian Chief of state concluded his speech reinforcing Brazilian authorities’ worries about the effects of the crisis in the nation: “We’re on guard, we’re not paralyzed. The government will not allow our growth to be damaged”, he states.
